28 June 2024, 10am-4pm

Author and critic Dr. Gilda Williams led a one-day workshop in Vienna for aspiring art writers and critics in late June 2024. With expertise in the field spanning over two decades, Williams provided participants with advice and insights on how to write about contemporary art in live-editing sessions and text discussions. The workshop was hosted by Phileas and took place at its Opernring 17 office.

Williams' acclaimed publication How to Write About Contemporary Art was published by Thames and Hudson in 2014 and has since been translated into seven different languages. She is the editor of ON&BY Andy Warhol (2016), part of the Whitechapel Gallery book series published by MIT Press. From 2008 to 2023 Williams was a Senior Lecturer on the MFA Curating programme at Goldsmiths College, University of London, where she specialized in art writing. She has collaborated with other institutions including The Ruskin School of Art, Oxford University; The Royal College of Art, London; Frieze Academy; Sotheby’s Institute of Art, London; and The Guardian newspaper’s ‘Masterclass’ series. Since 2023 she has established a textile-based studio art practice.

Her contributions to art criticism are substantial, as a long-standing London correspondent for Artforum magazine and member of the International Association of Art Critics. In 2020, she was invited to be an Evaluator for the Arts Writers Grant Programme of the The Andy Warhol Foundation | Creative Capital, New York.
