Austrian Pavilion at the Gwangju Biennale, South Korea
LEEKANGHA Art Museum, Gwangju, South Korea
Phileas is the commissioner of the Austrian Pavilion at the Gwangju Biennale in South Korea, jointly funded with the Federal Ministry for Arts, Culture, the Civil Service and Sport.
The Gwangju Biennale is the most important biennial for contemporary art in Asia, attracting around 500,000 visitors each edition. Established in 1995 as a tribute to the Gwangju Democratisation Movement, it began to host national pavilions in 2018, which are located at various venues across the city. This year’s Austrian Pavilion is hosted by the LEEKANGHA Art Museum.
The project Club Liaison by Liesl Raff will represent Austria at the 15th Gwangju Biennale in 2024 and is curated by Fiona Liewehr (artistic director, fjk3 – Contemporary Art Space, Vienna). Carolina Nöbauer (Tanzquartier, Vienna) is responsible for the performance programme.
Artist and curator were jointly appointed through an open call. The International Advisory Board of Phileas acted as the jury.
