Hui Ye (radio SLUMBER)
Manifesta 15, Barcelona
8 September – 24 November 2024
The themes of Manifesta 15, which takes place in Barcelona in 2024, are “cure and care.” Setting out to reshape the relationship between art, culture and society through dialogue with local communities and international cultural producers, it aims to revitalize, rethink and reclaim previously closed or overlooked locations through an innovative programme of performances, workshops, screenings, exhibitions, urban interventions and other activities. Throughout the 12 weeks of its public opening, Manifesta 15 hosts openings and exhibitions right across Barcelona’s metropolitan region.
The artist Hui Ye has been invited as part of the collective radio SLUMBER to develop a project in collaboration with members of the Asian diaspora in Sant Adrià del Besòs, an area that is home to some of the lowest income communities in the region and country. Their contribution to Manifesta 15 looks at how artists of Asian descent in Barcelona reflect upon their heritage, and how they counter and resist social and institutional racism with resilience, joy, play, pleasure, and togetherness.
Hui Ye (born in Guangzhou, China) lives and works in Vienna and is a member of several artist collectives. She founded Radio Slumber with Zoénie Deng Liwen, Elaine W. Ho and Clara Jo as a diasporic group of female artists who seek to address the challenges of living in different parts of the world and bridging Eastern and Western cultures. Their work involves sound, writing and craft practices and aims to create a space of acceptance and mindfulness for the viewer.
