Soshiro Matsubara with Bruno Pélassy: Another Side of the Order of the Starfish

Based on recent collaboration with two international art institutions, this autumn Phileas presents an exhibition featuring Austrian-based artist Soshiro Matsubara in dialogue with French artist Bruno Pélassy.
The exhibition Bruno Pélassy and the Order of the Starfish, curated by Anna Gritz, was shown at Haus am Waldsee in Berlin in 2023, while Presque partout, curated by Fanny Gonella, was presented earlier this year at 49 Nord 6 Est—FRAC Lorraine in Metz. Both exhibitions were co-produced by Phileas and featured a selection of Matsubara's works in conversation with Pélassy's sculptures. Matsubara was invited by the curators not only to respond to Pélassy's work with his ceramic pieces, but also to develop the exhibition design.
Following these collaborations, the exhibition in Vienna continues to explore Matsubara's multifaceted art practice together with Pélassy’s work. Matsubara's sculptures show certain parallels to the latter’s art, such as engagement with intimacy and vulnerability, and the intertwining of reality and surreal states.
In addition to his work as an artist, Matsubara is also a collector, incorporating found drawings, objects, and artifacts from flea markets and antique shops into his practice. In Vienna, the artist is exhibiting, for the first time, a selection of these collected pieces, placing them in dialogue with his own works and those of Pélassy. The exhibition architecture, designed by Matsubara, creates new sightlines and perspectives that recontextualise the displayed objects and create interactions between them.
