Constantin Luser

The Menil Drawing Institute, Texas, USA
21 March – 10 August 2025

Founded by philanthropists John and Dominique de Menil in 1954 and housed in a Renzo Piano-designed building, the Menil Collection in Houston, Texas, is committed to the belief that art is essential to human experience. The Menil Drawing Institute was built in 2008 to further curatorial and conservation expertise within the field of drawing. Aware of the central role that drawing has in many artistic practices, the Institute is dedicated to its study and exhibition and encourages experimental approaches. For the exhibition What Drawing Can Be, four contemporary artists – Jillian Conrad, Teresita Fernández, Tony Lewis and Constantin Luser – have been invited to challenge the boundaries of conventional drawing and create connections with sculpture and architecture. Luser’s contribution will be displayed in its own dedicated gallery; a series of new wire works will be accompanied by shadow-based drawings made directly onto the museum's walls, challenging visitors' viewing habits and creating a contemplative yet irritating effect.

Constantin Luser (born 1976 in Graz, Austria) is a draughtsman and sculptor. He studied Industrial Design at the Joanneum University of Applied Sciences in Graz, Conceptual Art at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, and Visual Media at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. He had solo exhibitions at, among others, Galerie Klüser, Munich; Kugelmühle, Mühldorf bei Feldbach; Das Muth, Vienna and Galerie Crone, Vienna and participated in group exhibitions in Langenzersdorfer Museum; Neuer Kunstverein Wien, Vienna; Heidi Horten Collection, Vienna; Kunstraum Dornbirn; Wien Modern, Vienna; Laurenz Space, Vienna and Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt.

This is the artist’s first collaboration with Phileas.
