Michael Kienzer
Fondazione Mudima, Milan
17 September – 18 October 2024
Fondazione Mudima is a non-profit foundation in Milan, Italy, dedicated to contemporary art. The curator Lorand Hegyi was appointed to conceive and plan a series of five exhibitions beginning in Autumn 2024. For the first project in this series, Hegyi invited artist Michael Kienzer for a solo exhibition titled Melted into the Surroundings that is intended to travel to additional institutions following its presentation in Milan.
The exhibition explores Kienzer's method of arranging industrial and “heavy” materials in geometric abstract forms, making them appear light and delicate in the process, and provide an opportunity to see how this approach adds to and fits within the history of sculpture in general. Kienzer produced a new series of works that were placed directly on the gallery floor, alongside existing sculptures and drawings that offered an insight into his working process from conception through to execution.
Michael Kienzer (born 1962 in Steyr, Austria) works with sculpture, installation, drawing and video. He is interested in notions of space, time, surface and compression, and his work often explores the act of physical force, seeking to change situations or structures that appear at first sight to be immovable. Recent solo and group exhibitions include mumok, Vienna; Kunsthalle Krems; Museum der Moderne, Salzburg; Henry Moore Institute, Leeds; and the Austrian Cultural Forum, Prague.
This is the artist's first collaboration with Phileas.
