Oliver Ressler
The Showroom, London
19 April – 24 June, 2023
For his exhibition Barricading the Ice Streets at the Showroom, which had previously been shown in Zagreb, Berlin and Talinn, Oliver Ressler explored the nature of the climate justice movement and labour markets specifically in context of the ecological crisis. For The Showroom, Ressler produced a new installation that draws attention to the political line followed in the UK in response to the climate crisis and its effects on the community. The installation included works by Ressler’s filmic archive, photography and sculptural elements and includes a public programme inviting contributions from major UK-based voices in the worlds of art and climate justice. The work was co-produced by Phileas. Barricading the Ice Streets aimed to channel discourse; providing an engaging, collaborative programme that challenges what art can be and do.
Oliver Ressler (born 1970 in Knittelfeld, Austria) works with film, installation and public art. In recent years, his projects have centred on current and past social movements. He has documented worker-controlled factories and migration, and researched the impact of transnational corporations, privatisation policies and ecological issues. His work was part of documenta 14 in Kassel and has been exhibited at institutions including Kunsthaus Graz; Kunstmuseum Bonn; MUDAM Luxembourg; Belvedere 21, Vienna; Fondazione Pastificio Cerere, Rome; and SALT Galata, Istanbul. He will also show at the Biennale de Casablanca in June 2023, a project that is also supported by Phileas.
