Latifa Echakhch
Donation to Lentos Kunstmuseum, Linz
In the spring of 2015, an exhibition of new work by Latifa Echakhch was presented at the Lentos Kunstmuseum, Linz. It was the artist’s first solo exhibition in an Austrian institution. In collaboration with Phileas, two works were acquired for the museum’s permanent collection.
Frames (violet, bleu marine, beige), 2009, is literally a work of deconstruction. Thread by thread, three individual carpets are unravelled by the artist until only the frames of the original forms remain. The resulting void appears to be inverted and filled with a number of different narratives.
Encrage, 2014, is one of eight similar works which Latifa Echakhch showed in the exhibition Restart. In keeping with her consistent manner of working, the clouds a recurrent motif re-contextualized in a given space and time. In Linz, the clouds were deliberately placed with their painted sides facing the exhibition walls. In light of the terror attack on the Parisian satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, the artist interpreted the black of the reverse sides as a filter. „Its absolute depth can convey both mourning and paralysis on the one hand and strength for future activity on the other.”
