Director

Alexander Klar is Director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle in Germany. Prior to this, he was Director of the Museum Wiesbaden, where he worked from 2010 to 2019. Having studied art history, history and archaeology at the Friedrich Alexander University in Erlangen, his museum career began in 1997 at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York as assistant to the exhibition A Quintessence of Drawing. After completing his PhD on 19th century style theory in 2000, he held positions at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice in 2001, and at the Kunsthalle in Emden from 2002 to 2004. In 2004, Klar moved to the Research Department of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, where he was exhibition curator for the Surrealism retrospective Surreal Things. From 2008 to 2010, he was founding director of the Emil Schumacher Museum in Hagen, and from 2010, he took over as director of the Hessisches Landesmuseum in Wiesbaden. Since August 2019 he has been director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle.

Alexander Klar was invited for a curatorial research trip in 2015  when he was Director of the Museum Wiesbaden.
