Paul Renner and Richard Hoeck
Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, USA
1 April – 28 August 2022
The Contemporary Arts Museum Houston invited artists Paul Renner and Richard Hoeck for an exhibition, which is being co-produced by Phileas.
In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, Contemporary Arts Museum Houston is re-imagining the ways in which artists can awaken the public, reinvigorate social relations and craft new futures for cultural institutions. In this context, Paul Renner and Richard Hoeck produced a new exhibition titled HOUSTON, SIE HABEN EIN PROBLEM!, which consisted of a presentation of art objects, nose-to-tail cooking, as well as a temporary bar. This is the first major presentation of Renner and Hoeck’s work in an American institution, and also the first collaboration between Phileas, the artists and the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston.
Paul Renner (b. 1957, Bregenz) is an artist and chef whose artistic approach focuses on the notion of the Gesamtkunstwerk. Anarchic and experimental, Renner’s exhibition projects culminate in theatrical soirées in which a broad spectrum of artistic genres is infused with culinary culture. He has presented projects at institutions such as Kunsthaus Bregenz and Kunsthalle Wien, as well as at the Leo Koenig Gallery, New York.
Richard Hoeck (b. 1965, Hall in Tirol) is a Vienna-based artist working in installation, sculpture, performance, photography and video. He has presented numerous exhibitions in both his home country and abroad, including the Galerie für Zeitgenössische Kunst, Leipzig; Museum Moderner Kunst Stiftung Ludwig (mumok), Vienna; 3rd Istanbul Biennial and the 33rd Biennial de São Paulo.
