Aaron Amar Bhamra in Belgium

Jester, Genk, Belgium
16 February – 11 May 2025

Jester was founded in 2021 in the former mining city of Genk, Belgium. Its residency programme invites international artists to explore the area's history and post-industrial landscape. For the exhibition Fugue, the work of Aaron Amar Bhamra will be presented in dialogue with the Belgian sculptor Céline Mathieu. Fugue forms a polyphonic harmony of fleeting gestures that converge in a composition of counterpoint, inversion and echo. The title is drawn from the Latin 'fuga' (flight) and refers to two meanings: a polyphonic musical motif and a psychological state of dissociation. Aaron Amar Bhamra interweaves his backgrounds in architecture and music. The artist orchestrates recurring forms and materials, mirroring shifting personal and social archives. In her work, Céline Mathieu imagines new tactics to rewire finances and revalue close relationships.

Aaron Amar Bhamra (born 1992 in Vienna, Austria) studied at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where he now works and teaches in the Department of Expanded Museum Studies. In 2020 he and Monika Georgieva founded Laurenz Space, an independent exhibition space in Vienna dedicated to artistic experimentation and discourse. His own work often responds to the spaces in which he is invited to present it. By placing reminders of previous exhibitions in the space, such as photographs and objects, he draws attention to the layering of time, atmosphere and experience. He questions the often-exclusionary nature of exhibition spaces and responds by creating a welcoming and accessible environment, often collaborating with other artists on his projects. Bhamra has presented his work in various galleries and museums, including Deichtorhallen, Sammlung Falckenberg, Hamburg; TaM, Veliko Tarnovo; mamatter, Berlin; Belmacz, London; SYSTEMA, Marseille; Kunstverein Kevin Space, Vienna; Fotogalerie Wien; Galerie Krinzinger Schottenfeld and Wien Museum, Vienna.

This is the artist’s first collaboration with Phileas.
