Mathias Poledna
Donation to mumok, Vienna
In 2018, Phileas co-produced a major new film work by Mathias Poledna, which premiered at the 10thLiverpool Biennial in July 2018. The concept for the biennial, Beautiful world, where are you?, derived from a 1788 poem by the German poet Friedrich Schiller, later set to music by Austrian composer Franz Schubert in 1819. The years between the composition of Schiller’s poem and Schubert’s song saw great upheaval and profound change in Europe. It is this uncertainty during times of change that Poledna explores in his film, which is set in the days of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy on the cusp of World War One. Following the biennial, Phileas extended this collaboration by acquiring the work for the mumok collection in Vienna.
Mathias Poledna was born in 1965 in Vienna. Past solo exhibitions include The Renaissance Society, Chicago; Secession, Vienna; Portikus, Frankfurt; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York and Hammer Museum, Los Angeles. In addition, he exhibited at the Austrian Pavillon at the 55th Venice Biennale, 2013.
