Søren Engsted

Donation to mumok, Vienna

In 2017, Phileas co-produced new works by the artist Søren Engsted for his participation in the 57thInternational Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Christine Macel. Phileas extended this collaboration to include the purchase of four works by the artist for the collection of mumok, Vienna. This was the third in a series of donations made by Phileas to mumok during the course of the year 2017.

Søren Engsted’s work investigates the importance of sculpture, both in relation to art history and to everyday life. He uses humour, as one element among many others, to question what art is and what it can be. Engsted’s work includes cheap materials and ready-made objects that he gathers in his studio and combines in an intuitive, playful manner. He is interested in the mistakes that occur in the creative process and the possibilities arising from these mistakes.

Engsted lives and works between Vienna and Copenhagen. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, and has had solo exhibitions at YEARS, Copenhagen; Verein für Raum und Form in der bildenden Kunst, Vienna; Kunsthaus Graz and Galerie Mezzanin, Vienna.
