Soshiro Matsubara in Vienna

Phileas, Opernring 17
2 October 2024 – 11 January 2025

In collaboration with two international art institutions we are presenting an exhibition featuring the Austrian-based artist Soshiro Matsubara in dialogue with the French artist Bruno Pélassy.

The exhibition Bruno Pélassy and the Order of the Starfish, curated by Anna Gritz, was showcased at Haus am Waldsee in Berlin in 2023. Another exhibition, Presque partout, curated by Fanny Gonella, was displayed this year at 49 Nord 6 Est - Frac Lorraine in Metz. Both exhibitions were co-produced by Phileas and featured a selection of Matsubara's works in conversation with Pélassy's sculptures. Matsubara was invited by the curators not only to respond to Pélassy's work with his ceramic pieces but also to design the exhibition architecture.

Following these collaborations, the exhibition at Phileas continues to explore Matsubara's diverse art practice in dialogue with Pélassy. Pélassy's creations, characterised by fantastical and sometimes eccentric approaches, combine various techniques and materials at the intersection of fashion and jewellery. His art delves into social values, norms, and gender identities, advocating for the dissolution of rigid conventions. Similarly, Matsubara's deeply sensual ceramic sculptures reflect concerns with intimacy and vulnerability, as well as the blending of reality and surreal states. His fabric-wrapped rooms and corridors create an immersive environment that highlights the exhibited works and introduces new perspectives.

The exhibition runs until 11 January 2025 and will be accompanied by a public programme that will also showcase Matsubara's activities as a collector and art dealer. Soshiro Matsubara (born 1980 in Hokkaido, Japan) lives and works in Vienna.
